What is local reach, and why do brands care more than your follower count?

Local reach is the share of your audience that actually lives in your market. It is the number a local business can use. A follower count tells a brand how many people follow you everywhere. Local reach tells that brand how many of those people could walk through its door this week.

Local reach · The headline number

The short answer: Local reach is the share of a creator's audience that lives in the business's market. It is the number that decides whether a post can turn into walk-ins. SIGNL ranks creators by local reach, never by follower count alone, because 2,000 neighbors beat 200,000 strangers for a local business.

The short answer

What is local reach, in plain words?

Local reach has two parts: a percentage and a count. The percentage is the share of your audience that lives in your market. The count is what that percentage works out to in real people. Both matter. The percentage shows how concentrated your audience is. The count shows how many local people a post can put in front of a business.

That is why SIGNL ranks creators by local reach, not follower count. We do not rank you by followers. We rank you by how much of your audience actually lives here. It is the headline number on a creator profile, and it is the first thing a smart local business should check. For how that ranking helps small accounts get booked, read how to get brand deals with a small following.

The math

Why does the percentage change everything?

Do the multiplication before you compare two creators. The examples below are illustrative math, not results from real creators, and they show why follower count alone tells a business almost nothing.

  • ✓5,000 followers at 50 percent local: about 2,500 local followers. Half of every audience this creator reaches lives in the market.
  • ✓50,000 followers at 5 percent local: about 2,500 local followers. Ten times the followers, the same local audience.
  • ✓50,000 followers at 10 percent local: about 5,000 local followers on paper, but a business paying that creator's rate is also paying for the other 45,000 people who cannot visit.

Read those three lines again. The small, concentrated creator can match a much larger creator on the only count a local business can spend, and do it without the waste. That is the case for concentration. It is also why a creator with 500 to 2,000 genuinely local followers is worth booking, which is the logic behind how to be a creator with 500 followers.

Raise yours

How do you build stronger local reach?

You build it the slow, obvious way. Post about places in your own market. Put your city in your bio so a business can place you in ten seconds. Engage with local accounts, reply to local followers, and let your audience grow where you live. Every local post gives local people a reason to follow you, and every local follower raises the share a business sees.

Do not buy followers. Bought followers are rarely local, they pull your local share down, and they add people who will never visit, comment for real, or buy anything. A smaller audience that lives here beats a padded audience that lives nowhere near you. For what businesses check beyond reach, read what brands actually look for in local creators.

How do comped and paid bookings fit with local reach?

Strong local reach gets you seen. The work itself comes in two lanes, stated plainly. A comped visit is 1 post or reel plus 1 story that shares the post, posted to a 48-hour standard, honest and disclosed, with the meal, service, or experience as the compensation. A paid booking works to the deliverables set in that booking's terms, at a rate you set yourself.

On paid bookings, creators keep 97 percent of their rate, and paid bookings start at a $50 floor. Momentum points add a second signal on top of reach: they reward on-time posting and raise your visibility to businesses. Reach gets you considered. Reliability gets you rebooked. Read the companion guide on what a comped creator visit actually includes and the pricing guide on how much a small creator should charge.

Creator FAQ

What else do creators ask about local reach?

What is local reach for a creator?

Local reach is the share of a creator's audience that lives in the creator's own market, plus the number of local people that share works out to. If you have 5,000 followers and half of them live in your market, your local reach is 50 percent, or about 2,500 local followers.

How is local reach different from follower count?

Follower count is everyone who follows you, everywhere. Local reach is only the part of that audience that lives close enough to visit a local business. A big follower count can have small local reach, and a small follower count can have strong local reach if most followers live in one place.

Why do brands care more about local reach than follower count?

A local business can only sell to people who can reach its door. Followers in other cities cannot book a table, sit in a chair, or walk into a shop. Brands care about local reach because it shows how much of your audience could actually become customers.

How can a creator raise their local reach?

Post about places in your own market, put your city in your bio, engage with local accounts and local followers, and grow where you live. Do not buy followers. Bought followers are rarely local, and they pull your local share down while adding people who will never visit.

How does SIGNL use local reach?

SIGNL ranks and surfaces creators by local reach, not by follower count. That ranking sits alongside your profile, your rate if you set one for paid bookings, and your Momentum points for on-time posting. Creators can set their own paid rate, keep 97 percent of it, and paid bookings start at a $50 floor.
