What brands actually look for in local creators

Brands and local businesses look for five things, in this order: a local audience that can actually visit, consistent posting, an honest voice, reliability against a 48-hour standard, and clean disclosure habits. Follower count sets your tier, but those five decide who gets booked.

What matters most: where does your audience live?

Local audience share comes first, before follower count, before production quality, before everything. A local business can only sell to people who can reach it, so the first thing it looks for is proof that your followers live in its market. On SIGNL that share sits on your profile, next to your name, for every business browsing creators to see. A creator with 1,400 followers and a high local share will get picked over a creator with 20,000 followers spread across the country, because nearly every view from the smaller account is a possible customer.

That is also why your tier is not the headline. Your tier is automatic, set by your total audience across platforms: Neighbors at 500 to 2,000, Locals at 2,000 to 15,000, Headliners at 15,000 or more. Tier tells a business your size band. Local share tells it whether your audience can walk through its door. If you want the math behind that, brand deals with a small following works through it, and how to get brand deals with a small following turns it into a playbook.

Consistency

Why does posting consistency matter so much?

Businesses are not buying one post. They are deciding whether you are a safe person to plan around, and consistency is the evidence. A feed with regular posts over the last few months, in a recognizable voice and a clear niche, tells a business three things: you will actually show up, you know how to make the post, and your audience is used to hearing from you, so your recommendation lands in an active feed, not a dormant one.

One viral post does not prove any of that. Worse, a viral post often brings in followers from everywhere, which dilutes the local share businesses care about most. Steady local posts do the opposite: they build a local audience that trusts your taste in your city. If your feed has gone quiet, restart it before you apply. Two or three honest local posts a week for a few weeks changes how your profile reads completely.

Honest voice

Why do good businesses want honesty, not guaranteed praise?

Because fake praise does not sell anything for long. Followers can tell when a post is scripted, they stop trusting the creator, and the business has paid for reach that no longer persuades anyone. Good businesses know this, so they look for a creator whose real opinions are visible in their feed: specific likes, specific dislikes, a voice that sounds like a person.

On SIGNL this is a rule, not a preference: a business cannot require a positive post, ever. Your job is an honest post about a real visit, in your own voice. A business that pressures a creator for praise is removed from the platform. When you apply, a feed full of genuine takes, including lukewarm ones, is a strength. It proves your positive posts mean something, which is exactly what a smart business is buying. The creators page sets out the honesty rules every roster member works under.

Reliability

How reliable do you need to be, exactly?

Reliability on SIGNL has a number: 48 hours. A Standard Visit is 1 post or reel plus 1 story that shares the post, posted honestly to a 48-hour standard after the visit, with a week as the outside limit, with clear disclosure, and the post stays live for 30 or more days. Show up at the time you agreed, redeem the visit in the app, post inside the standard, and keep the post live. That is the whole standard, and businesses plan their week around creators who meet it.

It sounds basic, and that is the point. The most common reason creators lose bookings is not weak content, it is silence: a visit claimed and never posted, a deadline missed with no message. A creator who communicates early, posts on time and keeps posts live becomes the first call for the next offer. Reliability is visible, too: your on-time record builds Momentum, covered below, and businesses see it before they choose.

Disclosure habits

What do clean disclosure habits tell a business?

Disclosure is where a business checks whether working with you is safe. Every comped or paid post must disclose the relationship clearly, at the start: #ad or a Paid Partnership label at the beginning of the caption, and on a story, the disclosure goes on the story itself. A caption that buries the disclosure at the end of a hashtag string, or leans on vague words like comped or thanks for having me, tells a business you cut corners with the rules that protect both of you.

Clean habits are easy to prove: look at your past sponsored or gifted posts and check that a stranger could tell, in the first line, that you got something for posting. If they could not, fix the pattern now, before a business checks. For the full rules, read how to get comped meals as a food creator, which covers FTC disclosure in detail, and the creator FAQ.

Momentum

What is Momentum, in plain English?

Momentum is the score that orders the creator list businesses see when they browse. It is not a follower score and it is not bought. You earn points for things a business would want to know: completing your profile, with photo, bio, neighborhood and local audience share, earns points. Posting on time earns +20 points per visit. Referrals earn +3 points per sign-up and +10 per approval, because creators who bring good creators help the whole roster.

In plain English: do the job well, on time, with a complete profile, and businesses see you sooner. Skip a post or leave your profile half finished, and other creators move ahead of you. Momentum rewards exactly the behavior this article describes, which is why a smaller creator with a strong record can sit above a bigger creator with a sloppy one. Finish the checklist below, apply free in the app, and your first on-time post starts building your score. More guides are in the SIGNL Learn hub, including how getting comped works.

  • ✓Photo: a clear photo of you, so a business and its staff can recognize you at the door.
  • ✓Bio: what you post about and who it is for, in plain words, with your city named.
  • ✓Neighborhood: the part of town you live in and post about, not just the wider metro.
  • ✓Local audience share: filled in and honest. This is the first number businesses check.
  • ✓Best-work links: two or three local posts that show your voice, your format and your comments.
  • ✓Stacked platforms: every platform you post on connected, so your tier reflects your total audience.
Creator FAQ

What else do creators ask about this?

Does follower count matter at all to brands?

It matters, but it is not first. Your follower count sets your tier automatically on SIGNL: Neighbors at 500 to 2,000, Locals at 2,000 to 15,000, and Headliners at 15,000 or more, based on your total audience across platforms. Local businesses check your local audience share, consistency and reliability before they weigh your count.

What local audience share should I aim for?

As high as you honestly can, grown where you live. There is no single magic number: businesses compare creators inside the same market, and a higher local share stands out because more of your views can become walk-ins. Never inflate the number and never buy followers, because bought followers are rarely local and drag your share down.

Can a business require a positive post?

No. On SIGNL a business cannot require a positive post or review, ever. Honest posts in your own voice are the product, and a business that pressures a creator is removed from the platform. Good businesses prefer it that way, because followers trust creators whose praise is clearly earned.

How does Momentum affect who gets booked?

Momentum orders the list businesses see when they browse creators. You earn points for a complete profile, for on-time posts at +20 points each, and for referrals at +3 points per sign-up and +10 per approval. A smaller creator with a complete profile and a clean on-time record can rank above a bigger creator without one.
