UGC vs. influencer posts: which do you actually need?

Businesses get sold these two as if they were the same purchase. They are not. UGC buys you content: a video or photo, made in a creator's style, for your business to publish. A creator post buys you an audience: the post runs on the creator's own account, in front of people who already follow and trust them. Name which problem you are solving before you pay for either one.

UGC vs. creator posts · Two different purchases
The short answer

What is the one question that settles it?

Ask this: when the work is done, who sees it? If the answer is "whoever visits our page or sees our ad," you are buying UGC, and the creator's audience size is almost irrelevant. If the answer is "the creator's followers, in their feed, from someone they chose to follow," you are buying a creator post, and the audience is the entire point.

Most local businesses mix these up and end up disappointed in both directions. They buy UGC and wonder why no new customers showed up, when nothing was ever distributed to new customers. Or they book a creator post and wonder why they cannot lift it into their ads, when reuse rights were never part of that purchase. Both disappointments are naming problems, and they are fixable before any money moves.

What UGC buys

What do you actually get when you buy UGC?

UGC, short for user generated content, is content made to look and feel like a real customer's post, delivered to the business as a file. The business publishes it: on its own feed, its website, or its ads. Done well, it beats polished brand creative because it looks like a person, not a campaign.

  • ✓What you get: a reusable asset you control: where it runs, how often, and for how long, within the rights you agreed.
  • ✓What you do not get: an audience. The creator's followers never see it unless the creator also posts it, which is a separate purchase.
  • ✓When it is the right buy: your own channels are the weak spot. Your feed is stale, your ads are tired, and people who do find you see nothing worth acting on.
  • ✓The catch: rights are the product. A UGC deal without clear usage terms, a clear term length, and approval for ad use is a file you may not be able to run where you wanted to run it.
What a creator post buys

What do you actually get from a creator post?

A creator post runs on the creator's account, to the creator's audience, in the creator's voice. For a local business, the value is not the follower count on that account. It is local reach: the share of that audience that actually lives nearby and can walk in this week. That is why SIGNL ranks and discovers creators by local reach, not follower count, as what local reach is explains.

  • ✓What you get: distribution to a local audience, plus the trust transfer that comes with a real person posting honestly about a real visit.
  • ✓The standard visit: on SIGNL, a comped visit delivers 1 post or reel plus 1 story that shares the post, posted within 48 hours, honest and disclosed. The full standard is in what a comped creator visit actually includes.
  • ✓When it is the right buy: people nearby do not know you yet, or know you exist and have no fresh reason to come in. New eyes are the problem, and only distribution solves it.
  • ✓The catch: you do not control the verdict, and you should not want to. A brief sets facts and must-mentions, never a script, as how to brief a creator lays out.
Decide in three moves

How do you pick the right one this month?

/ 01

Look at your last ten posts

If your own feed already looks alive and current, content is not your bottleneck. Buying more files will not fix a discovery problem. You need other people's audiences, which means creator posts.

/ 02

Look at who found you this month

If new customers say a friend or a post sent them, distribution is working and your own channels are where the next dollar belongs. If nobody new is arriving at all, no amount of content on your own page fixes that, because your page only reaches people who already found you.

/ 03

Sequence them, do not choose forever

For most local businesses the order is post first, reuse second. A creator visit creates the post and the raw material in one trip. License or book it with reuse terms, and the same visit then feeds your own channels and ads. One visit, both jobs, in the order that works.

Whichever lane you pick, price it in the open before you commit. The full cost picture for both lanes is in how much local influencers cost, and what came back is measured the way how to track influencer marketing ROI describes.

The rights line

When does a post become content you can reuse?

This is where the two purchases meet, and where businesses get burned. A creator post is not automatically UGC. On SIGNL, a comped visit is native share only on every plan: your business may reshare the post natively with credit, and that is the limit. There is no ad use in a comped visit, on any tier.

Reuse is a separate, priced step, and it works two ways. A paid booking includes one standard license inside its terms: 90 days of repost and paid ad use, never perpetuity. Or, after a comped post runs, you can send the creator a license request at their listed licensing fee: 90 days, the creator approves each use, and the creator keeps 97 percent. Paid bookings run at the creator's own rate, with a $50 floor, and the creator keeps 97 percent there too.

That structure is the honest version of the UGC pitch. The creator gets distribution value and reuse value priced separately, your business gets a clear right to run what it paid to reuse, and nobody discovers a missing permission after the ad is already live.

Business FAQ

What else do businesses ask about UGC and creator posts?

What is the difference between UGC and an influencer post?

UGC is content made for your business to publish: a creator films or photographs in a natural, creator style, and you run it on your own channels or ads. An influencer post, called a creator post on SIGNL, is published by the creator to their own audience. UGC buys you a reusable asset. A creator post buys you local distribution and the trust that audience has in the person posting.

Which does a local business need first, UGC or a creator post?

If people nearby do not know you yet, you need the creator post first, because content on your own page only reaches people who already found you. If people know you but your own feed and ads look empty or stale, you need content first. Most local businesses have a distribution problem before they have a content problem, so the post usually comes first and the reuse comes second.

Does a comped creator visit give a business content it can run as ads?

No. A comped visit on SIGNL is native share only on every plan: the business may reshare the post natively with credit, but there is no ad use. To run a comped post as an ad, the business sends a license request at the creator's listed licensing fee, for 90 days, the creator approves each use, and the creator keeps 97 percent. A paid booking already includes one standard license: 90 days of repost and paid ad use, inside the booking terms.

How much do creator posts cost a local business on SIGNL?

Businesses run creator visits on a published founding plan: Self-Service is $199 a month for up to 5 creator visits, Growth is $349 a month for up to 10, and Managed is $699 a month for up to 20. Founding businesses take $100 off the first month, plans carry a 3 month minimum, and unused visits roll into the next month, then expire. A paid booking is separate: the creator sets their own rate, with a $50 floor, and keeps 97 percent.

Can one creator visit do both jobs?

Yes, in the right order and with the right terms. The creator's post publishes to their own local audience first, which is the distribution you cannot get from UGC alone. If the booking is paid, or you license the post afterward, your business can then reuse that same content on your own channels and in ads for 90 days. Distribution first, reuse second, and the license agreed before any ad use.

For businesses

Buy the post first. License the reuse second.

SIGNL businesses browse local creators by local reach, run comped visits and paid bookings in one place, and license the posts worth reusing, with the terms stated up front. Start with distribution. Add the asset when it earns it.
